Silybum Marianum
Description
Product description Milk Thistle Tincture
Latin name: Silybum marianum or carduus marianus. The milk thistle is a large, graceful plant with glossy, marbled, spiky leaves. It is a biennial plant that grows up to 1.5 meters in a single season. Its most striking features are the white-flecked leaves and the spines around the leaf margins. Each stem ends in a purple-red thistle-shaped flower that blooms in July, August, and September.
The plant is a composite and related to plants like the daisy. The numerous purple disc flowers ripen into dark, fluffy seeds. The dried seeds contain substances with medicinal properties. This edible plant sows readily and prefers sandy soil and full sun. Bumblebees, butterflies, bees, and birds pollinate it. It originates in southern Europe and has spread northward on its own and naturalized here.
Its effects have been scientifically well-researched compared to other plants. Milk thistle owes its name to the Virgin Mary.
