Botany Valerian

Valerian is native to Europe, Russia, and parts of Asia. It grows best in damp meadows, forest edges, and along riverbanks. The creeping roots are fleshy and whitish-yellow on the inside. Fresh, the root has no noticeable odor, but once dried, it develops a characteristic and, to some, unpleasant scent. With its feathery leaves and pale pink to white flowers, it not only attracts the eye but also the curiosity of traditional herbalists.

Origin and traditional application

Valerian has a long history in herbal medicine. As early as the time of Hippocrates (460 v.C. – 377 v.CThis plant was described for its unique properties. In old European herbals, Valerian was known for its calming properties. Other cultures, such as indigenous peoples in North America, also used the root in traditional practices.

Today, Valerian is still valued by herbalists and herbalists. It is often used to promote sleep and as a natural sedative.

Dosage and use

Usage

Half an hour before a meal you can take the drops as they are, or in a glass of water. If you leave it for a while, the alcohol evaporates but the active ingredients are retained. Keep the liquid in your mouth for a while (preferably a minute) before swallowing; the ingredients come into contact with the oral mucosa and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Always start the treatment with a low dose. The more severe the symptoms, the lower the starting dose. This is to prevent a lot of toxins being released at once (by the death of germs). Because toxins are always released (even at low doses), a lot of (water) is drunk during the treatment and at the same time detoxification and elimination agents are used.

The properties of Valerian are enhanced by, among others, Hawthorn, Lemon Balm, Passiflora, St. John's Wort and Hops.

Dosage

Average treatment:First week 3 x 5 drops per day, then increase to 3 x 15 drops per day.

Intensive treatment:First week 3 x 10 drops per day, then increase to 3 x 30 drops per day.

In case of insomnia 100 drops before going to bed or 1 coffee spoon tincture in a glass of water. Or as prescribed by your doctor or practitioner.

This dosage is used for adults. For children aged 6 to 12, the dosage is usually halved.

Valerian should not be given to people with liver or kidney problems unless prescribed by a doctor.

Duration of the treatment

Depending on the application. In general, maximum 3 weeks. Otherwise take for two to four weeks. Do not exceed the recommended maximum daily dosage.
