Botany Spilanthes
Spilanthes (Spilanthes Oleraceais a fast-growing, annual plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to tropical South America and subtropical and tropical Africa. It grows to about 30 to 40 cm tall and is notable for its round, yellow-red flower buds that look like a two-colored button. However, it is primarily the brownish-green leaves that are appreciated for their special characteristics.
These heart-shaped leaves produce a characteristic tingling sensation on the tongue, which occurs upon contact with the mucous membrane. They are harvested when the concentration of natural substances is highest – preferably before flowering.
Spilanthes loves warmth, plenty of sunlight, and well-drained, humus-rich soil. In temperate climates, the plant grows best in summer, and under optimal conditions, it develops rapidly into a lush herb.
Origin and traditional application
Spilanthes has a long history of use in tropical regions, particularly in South America and Africa. In the Brazilian Amazon, the plant is known as “jambu” and is traditionally used in dishes such as soup – not only for its flavor, but also for the characteristic tingling sensation it leaves on the tongue.
Indigenous peoples used the fresh leaf of Spilanthes as a natural remedy for the care of the mouth and skin, where the tingling sensation was seen as a sign of action. In parts of Africa, too, the herb was valued within oral traditions, often used as a local remedy or as a ritual herb during moments of transition.
The plant was typically harvested directly from nature and used fresh – whether as a leaf that was chewed, added to food, or processed into simple infusions. This application lives on in the modern interest in Spilanthes as a plant with an authentic character and rich history.
