Origin and traditional application
Reishi has a rich history within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in which it was seen as a symbol of health, vitality and a long life. For centuries, Reishi was so precious that it was used exclusively by emperors and nobles. In Japan and Korea, too, the lacquer mushroom was traditionally used to support overall resistance and life energy.
Today, Reishi remains popular among herbalists and natural health enthusiasts, who appreciate this special mushroom for its harmonizing properties.
Botany Reishi
The Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum) is a striking fungus that grows as a saprophyte on dead or weakened tree trunks and stumps, particularly those of deciduous trees such as oak, beech, and maple.
The shape of the fruiting bodies can vary greatly, but is usually kidney-shaped to fan-shaped, with a glossy surface resembling lacquered wood – hence the nickname Japanese Lacquer Mushroom. The color varies from deep red to orange, brown, and even black, depending on age and growing conditions.
Reishi has a firm, leathery texture and a subtle earthy scent. In nature, it is found primarily in Asia, but it can also be found in Europe and North America, albeit rarely. For the sake of sustainability and quality, Reishi is nowadays mainly organically grown.
