Silybum Marianum
Description
Product description Milk Thistle Tincture
Latin name: Silybum Marianum or Carduus Marianus. The milk thistle is a large, graceful plant with glossy, marbled, spiny leaves. It is a biennial plant that grows up to 1.5 meters in a single season. The most striking features are the white-spotted leaves and the spines along the leaf margins. Each stem ends in a purplish-red thistle-shaped flower that blooms in July, August, and September.
The plant is a composite and belongs to the same family as plants such as the daisy. The numerous purple tubular flowers mature into dark, fluffy seeds. The dried seeds contain substances that have medicinal properties. The edible plant self-seeds easily and prefers sandy soil and full sun. Bumblebees, butterflies, bees, and birds ensure pollination. It originates from Southern Europe and made its way north under its own power, where it has become naturalized.
Its effects have been scientifically very well researched compared to other plants. Milk thistle owes its name to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
