Description
Characteristics and symbolism of Frankincense
Frankincense, also known as incense, comes from the resin of the Boswellia Serrata tree, which belongs to the Burseraceae family. The tree is between 2 and 8 meters tall and has thick, rough bark, often grayish or brownish in color. The most striking feature of this tree is its resin. When the bark is cut, a milky white sap is released that hardens into yellow or amber-colored drops. These resinous drops are harvested for incense.
The tree is native to the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Somalia and Oman. However, the tree also thrives elsewhere. in the dry, rocky regions of Northeast Africa. Its use is centuries old. For instance, in Egypt, it was often burned in temples and during rituals. There, it was associated with the gods and used in embalming. It is therefore not surprising that this aroma symbolizes purification, spirituality, and meditation. The Greeks and Romans valued the resin of Boswellia carterii for its fragrance and medicinal properties. It was used in perfumes, incense, and as a remedy for various ailments. For this latter purpose, this essential oil was also employed in traditional Indian as well as Chinese medicine.
