What is EM® and how does it work?
EM® — short for “Effective Microorganisms” — is not a chemical agent, but a mixture of various aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms found in nature: photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, and other fungi.
The unique aspect of EM® lies in the principle of dominance and harmony. In nature, there is often a struggle between “good” microorganisms and “harmful” microorganisms — plus a large group of neutral microorganisms. EM® works by ensuring that the “good” microorganisms become dominant, after which the neutral microorganisms join the predominant group. As soon as the good microorganisms form the majority, a microbial environment is created that promotes rest, balance, and regeneration — in soil, water, and other habitats.
EM® therefore focuses on restoring balance: organic material is broken down and converted into valuable substances, odors are reduced, and soil and water gain a healthier microbial climate — and all this in a gentle and natural way.
EM original solution (EM-1®) — the natural basis
Our EM original solution contains pure EM-1®. This is a mixture of naturally occurring Effective Microorganisms (EM®). These organisms have specific tasks and enhance each other's action. EM-1® is not manipulated or artificially modified — the strains are “as nature intended”.
With EM-1®, you literally give the right microorganisms the chance to take over — a natural foundation for those striving for more balance in soil, plants, water, and the living environment, without artificial chemicals.
To make optimal use of EM®, many people activate EM-1® by mixing it with cane sugar molasses and water so that the microorganisms “wake up” — this creates an active solution (sometimes called EM-A) that you can apply in the garden, home, or soil.
How do you do that? Mix 50 ml EM-1® + 50 ml cane sugar molasses (dissolved in 950 ml lukewarm water). Let this stand for 1 week. An active solution is only formed when sufficient heat is present. In the Netherlands, it is therefore recommended to add an activator or to place the mixture in a fermentation vessel.
