Wat is Bentoniet? Ontdek de kracht van deze bijzondere klei

What is Bentonite? Discover the power of this special clay

More and more people are looking for ways to naturally support their bodies. In this search, bentonite clay regularly appears as a unique mineral. But what exactly is bentonite? Where does it come from, how do you use it, and how does it differ from zeolite?

What is Bentonite?

Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay rich in the mineral montmorillonite—the component that gives this clay its exceptional absorbency. Its name derives from Fort Benton in Wyoming, USA, where bentonite was first mined on a large scale. This type of clay is now mined worldwide, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Although the precise composition can vary slightly depending on the location, montmorillonite remains the primary component.

What is the difference between Bentonite and Green Vitality and BentoniteMED?

Our range includes two bentonite-based products. Both consist of a powdered form of the clay montmorillonite. What's the difference?
BentoniteMEDA medically certified clay, suitable for internal use. This variety is extra finely ground and rigorously tested for purity and safety.
Bentonite Green VitalityAlso ultra-fine and high-quality, but not medically certified. It is of controlled pharmaceutical quality. Often used externally.

What does Bentonite clay do internally?

If you want to use Bentonite internally, you can choose the medically certified BentoniteMEDDue to its highly absorbent properties, this product can bind toxins and heavy metals.

In addition, it helps protect the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract because this clay swells upon contact with moisture. This creates a protective gel-like layer – also known as the montmorillonite gel film. This gel film can coat the gastrointestinal tract and thus mitigate the effects of harmful substances. Therefore, BentoniteMED is particularly suitable for people with sensitive intestines.

These properties and medical certificates allow us to share the following approved health claims about BentoniteMED:

What else can you use Bentonite clay for?

Common applications for external use are listed below. If you know of another great application, please share your ideas in the comments below.

  • Bentonite on the skin: as a clay mask for oily skin with blemishes, or as a pack for joint or muscle complaints.

  • Bentonite bath additive: for a detoxifying clay bath.

How to use Bentonite?

Want to discover the benefits of bentonite? Then get started! Below, we'll explain how to use bentonite for each application, briefly describing dosages and the method.

  • Internal use BentoniteMED: a standard dosage consists of half a teaspoon a maximum of 2-3 times a day.Add this to a glass of water, stir well and drink immediately. TipUse lukewarm to warm water to help the clay dissolve more easily. Drink extra water throughout the day because bentonite binds moisture.
  • External use of bentonite: Make a paste of bentonite with water or another liquid such as apple cider vinegar or rosewater. Apply to the skin and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm to warm water. Note: avoid using metal to avoid affecting the clay's effectiveness.
  • Bentonite Mouthwash: Add 1 teaspoon to a cup of water. Gargle for 30 to 60 seconds and spit out. Then gargle again with just water to completely remove bentonite from your mouth.
  • Bentonite Bath Additive: Add about half a cup to your bath and soak for about half an hour. Then rinse your skin.

What is the difference between Bentonite and Zeolite?

Bentonite and zeolite are both known as effective binders of harmful substances. The difference between bentonite and zeolite lies in their mineral structure. Zeolite is a microporous tuff with a crystal lattice full of voids, while bentonite is a clay mineral with a layered structure. The difference is also noticeable in use: zeolite mixes easily with water to form a drinkable substance. Bentonite adheres more readily to spoons or glasses, but mixes well with a whisk and/or warm water.

Can you combine Bentonite and Zeolite?

While both bentonite and zeolite are known for their ability to absorb unwanted substances, they each do so in their own way. Bentonite acts like a sponge: upon contact with moisture, it swells and forms a gel-like mass that physically encapsulates substances. Zeolite, on the other hand, has a crystalline, porous structure with a negative charge. This allows it to attract and retain certain charged particles, such as heavy metals or ammonium, like a magnet. You can read more about zeolite in our blog: What is Zeolite: super natural support for your intestines.

These different mechanisms of action complement each other and are therefore often combined. In powder form, they are easy to mix with water or add to a smoothie, for example, making them practical for daily use.

What is Bentonite for you? The answer lies in how you use it: as part of your natural health routine, to support spring cleaning, or as a skincare product. Whatever your choice, always choose a reliable, pure alternative and be well-informed.
